Rail
Network Rail’s £7.6 billion modernisation of the
West Coast route from London to Glasgow involves us in projects
ranging from £25 million to over £400 million as part of our
multi-functional consultant roleMott MacDonald’s track
record in railways dates back to the early 1900s with the
construction of the City and South London Railway. Now we provide
rail engineering consultancy services through railway teams based
in ten UK offices and world-wide, mainly in Central Europe, North
America and Asia Pacific. Our technical engineering disciplines cover all aspects of railway systems (trackwork, signalling, telecommunications, rolling stock, operations, safety assurance systems, mechanical and electrical, traction power, ergonomics) and infrastructure (tunnels, bridges, earthworks, stations, intermodal depots, marshalling yards).
We also specialise in applying advanced simulation techniques – using software designed in-house through our research and development programme – to develop enhanced solutions relating to passenger movement and fire and smoke behaviour, underground ventilation, train aerodynamics and traction power optimisation.
Our project portfolio spans all forms of rail transport. A brief cross-section includes:
- heavy rail for passenger and freight – the UK’s Channel Tunnel and West Coast route modernisation, the Trans European Network System in Hungary and Poland and Long Island Rail Road in New York, USA
- metros – London Underground including Jubilee Line Extension, Taiwan’s Kaohsiung metro, Los Angeles metro, Delhi metro, Warsaw metro, Oporto metro and Beijing metro
- high speed rail – the UK’s Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Taiwan high speed rail, schemes in Italy, Holland and Belgium for speeds up to 350 kph
- light rapid transit – numerous schemes in the UK and USA in cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, San Jose, Salt Lake City and Tampa
We offer our customers full project and programme management services and a total engineering capability covering all the necessary components of railway systems and infrastructure as a whole – all geared towards helping customers provide their users with a smooth, reliable, safe and efficient service operation.
To suit customer requirements we can alternatively provide selective advisory, planning and engineering services at any stage of a project’s development.
